Dr Cross in your pocket – using Facebook for Revision

So I resurrected my chemistrywithcross  Facebook group over the Christmas holidays. This is something I had used with some success a few years ago, and with only 2 days between returning to school and the Unit 1 exam I felt it would be a good time to bring it back. It worked very well, with 20/34 Year 12 students signed up. A few had trouble finding the group so I posted a direct in link on the school VLE to direct them. I posted a revision/exam tip each day and one or two links to websites or YouTube. The PV=nRt song is legendary amongst my students – and they have all remembered the equation from day 1! Students were also able to post questions for me and others used the like button on other students’ questions. I feel this makes Facebook better than direct email as all students in the group get the benefit of my response. Hopefully, as things progress students will answer each others questions too. Most of the questions I could answer directly in the reply box, but where this wasn’t appropriate I discovered the iPad app educreate from http://www.educreations.com/ This allowed me to draw freehand and record a verbal explanation too. Both the Facebook group and Educreate got very positive feedback from the students so I now plan to use them throughout the year, not just for revision.
